NIGERIA @52 ---MY REFLECTION. [Andrew Adedayo Adetoye]

Nation building is a tough task, and the task gets tougher when citizens and their government embrace mediocrity as a way of life. There is no place like that place you call home, and if you have destroyed that home due to your visionless,
spineless and aimless living, you will one day return to discover that your home is gone. No matter how safe and flourishing you might be in another land that is not yours, you are and always would be a stranger in that land. And your children would also be strangers in that land regardless of how long they stay there. You and your children are only first class citizens in your home country.

Isn't it therefore wise for everyone of us to invest time, resources and patriotism to build our home country, so that we can collectively boast of a secured future for ourselves and our children? And why should we live as second class citizens in another land, and trailed by all manner of negative publicity, when we can live comfortably as first class citizens in our own home country?

This Independence Day, October 1, there is need for all of us Nigerians to pause and reflect. Why do we commit to build other Nations, yet we have left ours in the dark? Why do we commit our borrowed and owned resources to create employment and wealth in foreign countries because we have chosen to remain import dependent, yet our sons and daughters roam about in their own country with their certificates in search of unavailable jobs? Well, 'analysts' claim that our graduates are not employable. Let the so-called 'analysts' tell us if the Chinese got to where they are today overnight, or if the Indians got to where they are today overnight. The 'analysts' should tell us the relevance of Learning Curve which emerging economies continue to utilize to build capabilities in their citizens. The 'analysts' should also tell us who is responsible for the national policy that should match turnovers in the educational sector with developmental priority and industrial needs.

If the world's largest Nation [CHINA] and the world's largest democracy [INDIA] are both leveraging on their massive population to build stronger economies in the 21st century, why can't the world's largest black Nation [NIGERIA] do the same? We have been asking this question for too long, and I think we have reached a critical junction where we must find answer.

Let's stop the game of deceit and politics that profits a few at the expense of our beloved country. Let's roll up our sleeves and go to work to move this Enterprise called Nigeria forward. This is our home country.

Happy Independence Day!
